When a tooth is too damaged
for a filling — but worth saving

Many patients arrive at Vera Dental having been told they need a crown but not quite sure what that means — or whether it's really necessary. Here are the situations where a crown or bridge is the right clinical answer.

Cracked or fractured tooth
A hairline crack or cusp fracture that can't be restored with composite filling. A crown binds the tooth and prevents the crack from spreading.
Post-root canal treatment
After root canal treatment, the tooth becomes brittle. A crown protects it from fracture and restores its full chewing function.
Large decay or old filling
When decay is too extensive for a filling to hold, or an old large filling has failed, a crown is the most reliable long-term solution.
Missing tooth — replacing with a bridge
A bridge fills the gap from a missing tooth using crowns on the adjacent teeth as anchors — no surgery required.
The Clinical Basics
What your dentist actually
places over your tooth
The tooth is gently shaped and reduced to create space for the crown to sit over it precisely
A detailed impression is taken and sent to a dental laboratory where your crown is custom-fabricated
A temporary crown protects the tooth while you wait 1–2 weeks for the permanent restoration
The permanent crown is checked for fit, colour match and bite before being permanently cemented

Two different problems.
Two different solutions.

A crown and a bridge are both fixed ceramic restorations — meaning they are cemented in place and cannot be removed. But they solve different problems.

Crown
Protect a damaged tooth
A cap placed over an existing tooth that is cracked, weakened, or heavily decayed. The natural tooth root remains intact underneath.
Bridge
Replace a missing tooth
A false tooth anchored between two crowns on adjacent teeth. Bridges are fixed — they do not come in and out like a denture.

Not all crowns are created equal.
Material determines longevity.

The material your crown is made from affects its strength, aesthetics, and how naturally it blends with your surrounding teeth. Your dentist will recommend the most appropriate option based on the tooth's location, your bite, and your goals.

Most Popular
Zirconia
The gold standard in modern dental restoration. Zirconia is an extremely strong ceramic that offers excellent aesthetics — including a natural translucency that mimics real enamel.
Best for: Front and back teeth requiring both strength and aesthetics
Time-Tested Value
PFM
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal combines a metal substructure for strength with a porcelain outer layer for aesthetics. A proven, durable option with a long clinical track record.
Best for: Back teeth needing reliable strength at a more accessible price point

A crown is only as good as the preparation behind it

Proper enamel reduction, accurate impression-taking, shade mapping, and precision bonding are what separate crowns that are built to last from those that chip or debond prematurely. At Vera Dental, we work with skilled ceramists and take no shortcuts in the preparation or fitting process. Because the most expensive crown is one that needs to be replaced.

What happens at
each appointment

Getting a dental crown is a two-appointment process. Most patients are pleasantly surprised by how straightforward and comfortable it is.

1
Assessment & X-rays
Your dentist examines the tooth, takes X-rays to assess the root and surrounding bone, and discusses material options with you. A treatment plan is agreed before any work begins.
Consultation appointment
2
Tooth preparation & impression
Under local anaesthesia, the tooth is gently shaped to create space for the crown. A detailed impression is taken and sent to the dental laboratory. A temporary crown protects the tooth in the meantime.
~60–90 minutes
3
Laboratory fabrication
Your permanent crown is custom-crafted by a dental ceramist to match the colour, shape, and contour of your surrounding teeth. This typically takes 1–2 weeks.
1–2 weeks
4
Fitting & cementation
The permanent crown is checked for fit, colour accuracy, and bite alignment. Any final adjustments are made before the crown is permanently cemented onto your tooth.
~30–45 minutes

What patients ask us
about dental crowns

Dental crown costs in Singapore typically range from $950 to $1,600 depending on the material. At Vera Dental, crowns start from $1,200. The price varies by material — zirconia and full ceramic crowns cost more than PFM, but offer superior aesthetics for front teeth. A consultation is needed to assess your tooth and recommend the most appropriate option.

Traditional Medisave claims are not available for standalone dental crowns. However, from mid-2026, seniors aged 60 and above can use Flexi-MediSave to offset crown costs at CHAS-accredited clinics like Vera Dental — this is a significant new development. CHAS subsidies may also apply depending on your card tier and household income. Ask us at your consultation for current eligibility.

A dental crown caps and protects a single existing tooth that is damaged, cracked, or weakened after root canal treatment. A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by anchoring a false tooth (pontic) between two crowns fitted on the adjacent natural teeth. Both are fixed restorations — cemented in place and not removable like a denture.

With proper oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, dental crowns are built to last for many years. The longevity depends on the material chosen, the quality of placement, and how well you maintain it. Zirconia crowns are among the most durable options available. Good home care — brushing, flossing, and avoiding habits like grinding — plays a significant role in how long your crown lasts.

The best crown depends on the tooth's location, your bite force, aesthetic goals, and budget. Zirconia is increasingly the default for both front and back teeth — it combines high strength with a natural-looking translucency. Full ceramic (e-max) is ideal for front teeth where aesthetics are the priority. PFM is a proven option offering good durability at a lower cost, best suited for back teeth. Your dentist will recommend the most appropriate material after examining your situation.

The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, so you will feel pressure and vibration but no sharp pain. Mild sensitivity or soreness for a few days after the appointment is normal as the tooth and gums settle. Most patients find it far more comfortable than they anticipated. If you have dental anxiety, let us know beforehand — we can discuss ways to make the experience more comfortable for you.

Root canal treatment removes the tooth's nerve and internal tissue, which can leave the tooth more brittle and prone to fracturing under normal chewing forces. A crown placed over the treated tooth protects it from cracking and significantly extends its functional lifespan. Without a crown, a root canal–treated tooth is at high risk of fracturing — which often means losing the tooth entirely.

A bridge is a non-surgical alternative to an implant for replacing a missing tooth. However, a bridge requires the healthy adjacent teeth to be filed down permanently to support the crowns — altering teeth that would otherwise not need treatment. Bridges also do not prevent the bone loss that occurs in the jaw after a tooth is lost. Dental implants are generally considered the preferred long-term solution for missing teeth because they stand independently and preserve jawbone health. Your dentist can advise which is more appropriate given your specific anatomy and circumstances.

A dental crown at Vera Dental typically takes two appointments. At the first, the tooth is assessed, shaped and an impression taken — you leave with a temporary crown. At the second (usually 1–2 weeks later), the permanent crown is fitted and cemented. If any additional treatment is needed first (such as a root canal or gum treatment), the total number of visits may increase.

The quality of a crown is determined by the material, the skill of the ceramist who fabricates it, and the precision of the dentist's preparation and bonding technique. A crown made from lower-grade ceramic or bonded without proper technique may chip, debond, or fail sooner — requiring replacement at greater total cost. At Vera Dental, we use quality crown systems and take no shortcuts in preparation or fitting, because the most expensive crown is one that needs to be redone.
