Crowns, Veneers and Fillings After Whitening: Avoiding a Mismatch

If you have crowns, veneers or tooth-coloured fillings, whitening can leave them a shade or two darker than the teeth around them. Here is what changes and what does not, how we check for a mismatch before you start, and what can be done about it.

Whitening gel lightens natural enamel only. Crowns, veneers, implant crowns and tooth-coloured fillings stay the same colour, so they can look darker once the teeth around them have lightened.

Your dentist checks this before whitening. If a mismatch would show, the options include a gentler shade, or replacing the restoration afterwards to match.

Most people do not think about their fillings until after whitening, when a small grey-yellow patch appears on a front tooth that was never noticeable before. It is easy to avoid that surprise by looking at existing dental work first.

What Changes Colour, and What Does Not

In your mouthChanges with whitening?Notes
Natural enamelYesHow much varies from person to person
Tooth-coloured (composite) fillingsNoFront fillings are the most likely to show
Porcelain or zirconia crownsNoIncludes crowns on implants
VeneersNoPorcelain veneers keep their colour
Bonding on chipped edgesNoCan be redone to match after whitening
DenturesNoShade is set when they are made

Back-tooth fillings and crowns rarely matter, because they do not show when you smile. The ones to think about are on the front six to eight teeth.

How We Check Before You Whiten

  • We note every visible restoration: which teeth have crowns, veneers or fillings, and what shade they are.
  • We record your starting shade on a shade guide, so the change can be measured.
  • We show you the likely outcome. If a crown already matches your teeth closely, a big shade change will make it stand out.
  • We agree a plan before you start: how far to go, and whether anything will need replacing afterwards.

Your Options if There Is a Mismatch

  • Whiten to a shade closer to your existing work. A smaller change keeps everything even.
  • Replace small front fillings or bonding after whitening, matched to the new shade. This is usually straightforward.
  • Replace a crown or veneer to match. This is a bigger decision, often made when the crown is due for replacement anyway. See dental crowns and bridges and veneers.
  • Leave back-tooth work as it is. It rarely shows.

Wait before matching

If fillings or crowns are being replaced after whitening, waiting about two weeks lets your new shade settle first.

Before any whitening, she checks your gums, any decay and the crowns, veneers and fillings you already have, because those will not change colour. She records your starting shade on a shade guide and tells you honestly which teeth will lighten and which will not. Then she looks after you through the session, adjusting for comfort as she goes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What patients ask us about existing dental work and whitening.

No. Porcelain and zirconia crowns, including implant crowns, keep the colour they were made in. Only natural enamel lightens.
No. Tooth-coloured fillings stay the same, so a front filling may look darker after whitening. It can be replaced to match once your new shade has settled.
You can whiten the natural teeth around veneers, but the veneers will not change. Your dentist will show you how the shades are likely to compare before you start.
About two weeks is a common guide, so the whitened shade has settled before the new filling colour is chosen.
Same-Day Whitening is $588 for one visit, under 2 hours. A take-home kit with custom trays is $420.
