Same-Day Whitening at Vera Dental is $588 for one visit, under 2 hours. A take-home whitening kit, with custom trays you keep, is $420.

Natural teeth lighten, but crowns, veneers and fillings do not. So if you are planning new dental work, whitening usually comes first. Results vary from person to person, and your dentist records your starting and finishing shade on a shade guide.

As a cosmetic treatment, whitening cannot be paid for with Medisave or CHAS.

Kopi, teh, braised dishes and dark sauces are part of daily life in Singapore, and over the years they leave their mark on enamel. Professional whitening lifts much of that staining. What makes our approach a little different is where we start: with the dental work already in your mouth, and any that you are planning.

Planning Your Shade Around Crowns, Implants and Veneers

Whitening gel works on natural enamel. Porcelain crowns, implant crowns, veneers and tooth-coloured fillings keep the colour they were made in. That matters in two situations:

  • You are about to have a crown, implant or veneer made. Whitening first lets the new restoration be matched to your brighter shade, rather than locking in your current one. Our guide to whitening before a crown, implant or veneer explains the timing.
  • You already have crowns, veneers or front fillings. After whitening, they may look darker than the teeth around them. We check this before you start, so you know what to expect. See crowns and fillings after whitening.
The question is not only how white your teeth can go. It is how your whole smile will match when you are done.

Because Vera Dental focuses on dental implants, crowns and veneers, shade planning is part of how we approach every whitening case.

What Happens During Same-Day Whitening

Same-Day Whitening takes one visit of under 2 hours. A typical session runs like this:

  1. Check and starting shadeYour dentist checks your teeth, gums and existing dental work, and records your starting shade on a shade guide.
  2. Protecting your gumsCheek retractors keep your lips clear, and a protective barrier is painted over the gums.
  3. WhiteningYour dentist applies a professional-strength hydrogen peroxide whitening gel, activated with a blue LED light, applied and monitored by your dentist, usually in a few rounds.
  4. Finishing shadeThe gel is removed, your teeth are rinsed, and your finishing shade is recorded so you can see the change.
  5. AftercareYou go home with simple instructions for the next 48 hours.

Why whitening is done by a dentist

Under Singapore Dental Association guidance, only a registered dental practitioner may use tooth-whitening products with over 6% hydrogen peroxide. A dentist can also spot decay, gum problems or existing dental work that would change the plan.

The Take-Home Whitening Kit

If you would rather whiten gradually, the take-home kit uses trays made from a 3D scan of your teeth. You wear them with whitening gel each day over a couple of weeks. The trays are yours to keep, so you can top up later with more gel.

Who Whitening Suits, and Who Should Wait

Whitening works well on yellowish staining from food, drink and age. It is worth knowing the limits before you start:

  • Crowns, veneers and fillings do not change colour. They may need replacing afterwards if you want them to match.
  • Gum disease and decay are treated first. Whitening over them can be uncomfortable. A clean first helps too; see our page on scaling and polishing.
  • Sensitive teeth need care. Your dentist can adjust the approach, or suggest the take-home kit.
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding, or under 18? Whitening is not recommended.
  • Deep grey or banded staining may respond less to whitening. In that case whitening versus veneers is worth reading.
◇

Sensitivity and the First 48 Hours

The most common side effect is temporary sensitivity, especially to cold. According to the Singapore Dental Association, as many as two in three people notice some sensitivity. It usually settles within a few days.

Freshly whitened teeth stain more readily for about two days. It helps to:

  • Skip or cut down on kopi, teh, dark sauces, curry, soya sauce dishes and red wine
  • Avoid smoking
  • Use a sensitivity toothpaste if your teeth feel tender
  • Drink coloured drinks through a straw if you cannot avoid them
  • Rinse with water after meals

How long results last depends on your habits. Regular cleans and fewer staining foods help, and the take-home trays make occasional top-ups easy.

Before any whitening, she checks your gums, any decay and the crowns, veneers and fillings you already have, because those will not change colour. She records your starting shade on a shade guide and tells you honestly which teeth will lighten and which will not. Then she looks after you through the session, adjusting for comfort as she goes.

Frequently Asked Questions

What patients ask us about teeth whitening.

Same-Day Whitening is $588 for one visit, under 2 hours. A take-home whitening kit with custom trays you keep is $420.
One visit, under 2 hours. That includes checking your teeth and recording your starting shade, protecting your gums, the whitening itself and recording your finishing shade.
No. Crowns, veneers, implant crowns and tooth-coloured fillings keep their colour. If you are planning new dental work, whitening first lets it be matched to your brighter shade.
Many people notice some short-lived sensitivity, as many as two in three according to the Singapore Dental Association. It usually fades within a few days, and a sensitivity toothpaste can help.
It is not. Whitening is cosmetic, so Medisave and CHAS cannot be used for it.
That depends on your natural shade and the kind of staining you have, so it differs between people. Your starting and finishing shades are noted on a shade guide, so you can see the change for yourself.
