Night Guards for Implants, Crowns and Veneers: Protection While You Sleep

If you grind at night and have implant crowns, bridges or veneers, a custom night guard is the simplest way to protect them. Here is what a night guard does, how ours are made from a 3D scan, how to look after one, and what it costs at Vera Dental.

A custom night guard is a thin, close-fitting cover worn over the teeth at night. It takes the wear and spreads the force of grinding, which helps protect porcelain, implant screws and natural enamel.

At Vera Dental, night guards are made from a 3D scan and start from $230. Your dentist confirms the type and fee at consultation.

Dental work is designed for everyday chewing. Night-time grinding is a different kind of load: longer, harder and often sideways. A night guard does not stop you grinding, but it changes what takes the force. The guard wears instead of your teeth, and the load is spread across the arch rather than focused on one crown.

What a Night Guard Protects

Dental workRisk from grindingHow the guard helps
Implant crowns and bridgesChipped porcelain, loosened screws, extra load on boneSpreads force across the arch and cushions the implant crown
Crowns on natural teethChipped porcelain, cracked underlying toothStops opposing teeth grinding directly on the porcelain
VeneersChipped or debonded edgesCovers the edges that take the most side-to-side force
Natural teethFlattening, chips, cracks, sensitivityThe guard wears instead of the enamel

For people with implants, the guard is especially useful because implants lack the natural cushion that teeth have. Our article on grinding and dental implants explains why.

Custom Night Guard vs a Store-Bought Guard

Pharmacy and sports guards are made to fit many mouths, so they tend to be bulky and loose. When there are crowns, bridges or implants in the mouth, that matters:

  • Fit. A custom guard is made for your teeth and dental work, so it stays in place without you clenching to hold it.
  • Even contact. Your dentist adjusts the biting surface so the force spreads evenly and no single crown takes the load.
  • Comfort. A thinner, closer fit is easier to sleep in, and a guard is only useful if you wear it.
  • Checking. The fit is reviewed at check-ups, and the guard can be adjusted if your dental work changes.

Already have a guard?

Bring it to your appointment. If it still fits well after new crowns or an implant, it may only need adjusting. If not, a new one can be made from a fresh 3D scan.

Looking After Your Night Guard

  • Rinse and brush it gently with a soft brush and cool water each morning. Hot water can warp it.
  • Let it dry, then store it in its case, away from heat and pets.
  • Bring it to your check-ups so the fit and wear can be checked.
  • Tell us if it feels tight, loose or cracked. Changes in fit can follow new dental work.
  • Expect wear. Visible grooves show it is doing its job. Heavy grinders may need a replacement sooner.

If you also wake with a sore jaw or headaches, see our guide on waking up with jaw pain. For the full picture of options, visit our teeth grinding and jaw clenching page.

Careful Assessment, Clear Options

Dr. Celeste Ling — Dental Surgeon | Associate

Assesses grinding and clenching, and performs botulinum toxin injection when it is the chosen option.

Dr. Celeste Ling graduated with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (Honours) from the University of Manchester and trained across specialty departments at the National Dental Centre Singapore. She is accredited by the Singapore Dental Council to perform botulinum toxin injection.

Many people who clench have been told to "just relax". Dr. Celeste Ling prefers to show you what she can see: the wear on your teeth, how firm your jaw muscles feel, how your bite meets. Then she explains each option, including what it will not do, so you can choose with the full picture.

Protecting the Work You Have Invested In

Dr. Jamie Wong — Founder & Chief Dental Surgeon

Assesses bite, grinding and the load on implants, crowns and bridges.

Dr. Jamie Wong (BDSc Hons, University of Queensland) founded Vera Dental and has over a decade of hands-on experience in implant dentistry. Much of that work is long-term: checking how implant crowns, bridges and natural teeth are holding up years after treatment.

Grinding is one of the things she looks for most closely, because heavy night-time forces are a common reason dental work chips or loosens. Spotting the habit early, and protecting against it with a well-fitted night guard, is far simpler than repairing the damage later.

Frequently Asked Questions

What patients ask us about night guards.

Custom night guards at Vera Dental start from $230. Each is made from a 3D scan of your teeth, and your dentist confirms the type and final fee at your consultation.
Yes. A custom guard is designed to fit over natural teeth, crowns and implant crowns together, spreading grinding force across the arch so no single implant takes the load.
No. A night guard protects your teeth and dental work from the effects of grinding rather than stopping the habit. Many people find their jaw feels less tired in the morning once they wear one regularly.
Over-the-counter guards are bulky and fit loosely, which can be uncomfortable and may not spread force evenly over crowns or implants. A custom guard is made and adjusted for your mouth.
It depends on how heavily you grind. Some last several years, while heavy grinders may wear through one sooner. Bring it to check-ups so wear and fit can be checked.
